This award honors the legacy and contributions of Robert L. Scheig, MD, a compassionate physician who was instrumental in creating the first hospice in the nation at the Yale School of Medicine.

Scheig was an emeritus professor of medicine at UB who directed the internal medicine residency program and was known as an extraordinary mentor. He strove to make Buffalo a leader in clinical palliative medicine, education and research.

The award fund was established by his widow, Denise Scheig.

This fund provides support for University at Buffalo medical school fellows and residents who have a strong, demonstrated interest in patient care and research in the field of palliative care medicine.

Awardees may use these funds for a variety of educational activities and materials that aid their professional growth and expand their expertise and knowledge of palliative medicine, including:

  • training
  • conferences
  • books
  • research equipment and materials
  • Hospice and Palliative Medicine Board certification
