I am one of only two orthopaedic surgeons trained in trauma practicing in the greater Buffalo region. My expertise and experience allow me to treat people with multiple traumatic and complex pelvis and extremity injury. As director of orthopaedic trauma services at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), my practice encompasses care of patients who have sustained acute, complex orthopaedic trauma and complications of musculoskeletal trauma. My goal is to return patients to full function from what are sometimes devastating injuries. In addition to trauma care, I care for general orthopaedics patients who have a wide variety of clinical problems, including those with complications from injury and patients in need of lower-extremity joint reconstruction. As a member of UBMD Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine since completing my orthopaedic trauma fellowship in 1995, I care for people from all walks of life. My goal and greatest satisfaction is bringing about a successful clinical result for my patients. I was one of three designing surgeons of a hip fracture implant for a major orthopaedic implant company. I championed the implant’s worldwide release and developed its early instructional courses. My research now focuses primarily on clinical orthopaedic trauma problems, including pelvis fractures and compartment syndrome practice patterns. I am working on an ankle fracture study, a hip fracture multicenter study and a study evaluating impact of muscle mass on clinical outcomes in trauma. My goal in research is to improve outcomes by learning from surgical experiences, both locally and as part of larger collaborative studies. Teaching is a significant part of my career. My interaction with trainees keeps me on my toes as a teacher and practitioner, and my commitment to teaching locally, nationally and internationally has been recognized with four teaching awards. My daily interactions with residents includes rounding, formal and informal teaching in hospital, emergency room and clinic settings and, perhaps most importantly, hands-on tutoring techniques of orthopaedic surgery in the operating room -- often seven days a week. I train young orthopaedic surgeons in the craft of operating, and I also mentor them so that they grasp the responsibility inherent in caring for people. I strive to produce capable, independent, ethical surgeons ready to launch successful careers.

I am an acute care surgeon board-certified in both surgery and surgical critical care, with clinical focus in trauma, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care. The most important part of my job is providing compassionate surgical care to my patients, who are often acutely injured and/or critically ill. I have a deep awareness of, and empathy for my patients’ suffering, and I do my best to alleviate it. I practice medicine with a golden rule — “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. I believe that an optimal medical decision is the one that integrates information about the patient’s clinical state and circumstances, the available research evidence, as well as the patient’s values and preferences. I also perform laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery (small bowel, colorectal and biliary), complex hernia repair, endoscopy and provide wound care. My scholarly focus is in the area of trauma and critical care-related pathophysiology. In basic science, I was the first to demonstrate that food high in advanced glycation end-products (AGE) and its interaction with the receptor (RAGE) predispose patients for aspiration-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in trauma. In clinical research, I have been pursuing interests in areas of utilization of imaging study in trauma, prevention of blood clot formation in head injury patients, ICU quality improvement. I was a co-investigator on NIH-funded grants for evaluation of aspiration biomarkers in trauma and surgery, as well as on an SIS multicenter study on duration of antibiotics for abdominal infection. I have mentored numerous surgical residents and medical students in research, which has led to them receiving national research awards. I have a bibliography of 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 6 book chapters, in addition to many oral and poster presentations. I serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Surgical Research. I have a passion for teaching medical students and residents. I find satisfaction in sharing my knowledge, experience and wisdom with those in the training phase of their careers. The trainees’ inquiries have helped me stay current in the field, and ultimately help me render the best care to my patients. As a surgeon, role model and mentor, I have inspired many medical students to pursue surgery as a career.

As an orthopaedic surgeon, my practice is centered on providing the highest level of orthopaedic care for fractures and lower extremity joint reconstruction. From simple fractures to complex pelvic trauma, I take pride in personally delivering the care my patients need. The same focus on personal care applies to my elective practice performing hip and knee replacement. In addition to seeing and treating patients in Western New York, I enjoy keeping up with current research topics. My research interests include orthopaedic trauma outcomes and pain management in the acute setting, as well as utilization of three dimensional imaging technology in orthopaedic patient assessment and preoperative planning. I joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2008, and am currently the program director for our residency program. I enjoy the challenges and rewards of training future generations of orthopaedic surgeons. Teaching enriches my practice as it requires me to be at the top of my game and to stay current with the latest practices and techniques in the field.
Foot & Ankle Surgery; Orthopaedic Surgery; Surgery - Trauma
As an orthopaedic physician, the focus of my practice is complex foot and ankle deformities. Total ankle replacement, lower extremity osteotomies and complicated hindfoot fusions are unique aspects of my practice. There are many people that have arthritic deformities of the foot and ankle, often from previous traumatic injuries, that have difficulty with normal daily activities or difficulty simply walking any distance without pain. Surgical and non-surgical options exist for these patients to return them to higher levels of function with less pain. I joined UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in 2004 when I returned to my hometown of Buffalo, upon completed of my medical education. I am board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. I also maintain membership in the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, New York State Orthopaedic Society, Western New York Orthopaedic Society and Erie County Medical Society. In addition to my clinical practice, I participate in educating medical students and residents at the University of Buffalo, as I serve as an assistant clinical professor. I also continue to lecture at local and national conferences on reconstruction of the foot and ankle. Through my affiliation with the University of Buffalo, I continue to be involved in related research projects with abstract and presentations at national meetings as well as publications in peer reviewed journals.
