Research Summary:
I have been involved in emergency medicine since 2001 when I began as a volunteer firefighter/EMT/SCUBA rescue technician at East Amherst Fire Department in Amherst, NY. I worked at Rural Metro Medial Services throughout my undergraduate career at UB while majoring in Psychology. After obtaining a BS in Psychology from UB, I moved to Sarasota, Florida to join the inaugural class at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine's Florida campus. Following completion of the didactic years of medical school, I traveled around the Northeast completing rotations in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Detroit. Following graduation from LECOM, I began residency through UB in emergency medicine (primary sites include Buffalo General Hospital, Erie County Medical Center, Women & Children's Hospital). I served as chief resident my final year of residency. Towards the end of residency while teaching for the Paramedic program at ECC, I also obtained my paramedic certification which I still maintain today. I also became involved with MercyFlight of WNY during that time period, and upon completion of residency became a flight physician and medical director with the company. Most recently, I have been named the Vice President of Medical Operations at MercyFlight of WNY. Following residency, I joined the partnership track at FDR Medical Services, a physician owned company providing board certified emergency physicians to DeGraff Memorial and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospitals along with United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, NY. I then remained as a partner at FDR for several years and enjoyed substantial professional growth. Most recently FDR has joined UB|MD Emergency Medicine and I continue to work clinically at DeGraff Memorial and Millard Fillmore Suburban hospitals as well as at the Erie County Medical Center and Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, Buffalo, NY. UB|MD Emergency Medicine is the largest emergency medicine group in Western New York. I am also very involved with public health and efforts to help curb the opioid epidemic.

Research Summary:
Jeffrey J. Thompson, a native of Western New York, joined the faculty of emergency medicine upon completion of his residency in 2008. He completed his medical school and residency training through the SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, serving as chief resident during his final year. As a clinician, Dr. Thompson works in the emergency departments at the Buffalo General Medical Center and ECMC. Prior to this appointment he worked full-time for Professional Emergency Services at the Millard Fillmore hospitals. Through his work at Millard Fillmore Gates, he developed an interest in neurological emergencies, specifically stroke and TIA management and observation. He is also interested in public health, primarily as it relates to disease prevention and resource utilization. He is passionate about international medical missions, and has completed several mission trips, including a recent trip to Haiti with a group of UB medical students. Dr. Thompson greatly enjoys medical education, a passion he discovered during residency. This led him to become actively involved in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program where he is currently one of the Associate Program Directors. In additional to his clinical teaching he provides oversight to one of the resident reading sessions; organizes and administers Oral Board review cases; and lectures frequently to students, residents, and faculty. He completed the Physician Educator course through UB and the Royal College of Physicians in 2012.
