The practice of vascular surgery has changed dramatically in the last decade, largely as a result of rapid adoption of technologic advances by most vascular surgeons, and I am proud and happy to be a part of this evolution. We the vascular surgeons do not consider ourselves as just surgeons, but "therapists" of vascular disease. This mainly stems from our better understanding of the natural history of vascular diseases, and their treatment. Our capability of doing both surgery and minimally-invasive procedures puts us in the best position on treat the millions of complicated patients with vascular disease. I am privileged to work with veterans with very complicated vascular problems, and we perform about 700 vascular and endovascular interventions yearly. My main areas of clinical and research interests are abdominal aortic aneurysms (esp. stent graft repair), limb salvage interventions (bypasses and angioplasty/stenting procedures), and carotid artery disease. Research and Professional Goals: 1. Clilnical research program: Our work at Roswell Park Cancer Institute focuses on translational research in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, including collaborations with other clinicians and scientists in biological markers of cancer and cancer progression. 2. Health Services Research: Using a variety of data sources, we are working on methods to define and improve the quality of cancer care. The models used for this work include administrative claims data from regional payers, and multi institutional databases through national consortiums. 3. Clinical activities: We maintain a high volume, multidisciplinary program in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Teaching, clinical trials and translational research are integrated into this program at all levels.

I am an acute care surgeon board-certified in both surgery and surgical critical care. The most important part of my job is providing compassionate care to my patients, who are often acutely injured and/or critically ill. I have a deep awareness of, and empathy for my patients’ suffering, and I do my best to alleviate it. My clinical focus is in trauma, critical care and emergency general surgery. I also perform laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery (small bowel, colorectal and biliary), complex hernia surgery, as well as endoscopy and wound care. My research is focused on improving care for injured and critically ill patients, including topics in gut-origin bacterial translocation, aspiration and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), damage control resuscitation and imaging in trauma. I was a co-investigator on NIH-funded grants for evaluation of aspiration biomarkers in trauma and surgery, as well as on an SIS multicenter study on duration of antibiotics for abdominal infection. I encourage medical students and residents to approach me for collaborative research opportunities. The research experience will enable them to develop critical thinking and help shape their practice of medicine. I have mentored numerous surgical residents and medical students in research, which has led to them receiving national research awards. I have a passion for teaching medical students and residents. I find satisfaction in sharing my knowledge and experience with those in the training phase of their careers. In return, their questions help me stay current in my field and ultimately help me render the best care to my patients. I am the course director of the elective internship in trauma. I also give lectures on traumatology to medical students. As a surgeon, role model and educator, I have inspired many medical students to pursue surgery as a career.

My current research interests and expertise are in the following areas: limb salvage for sarcomas and other tumors; node dissections in malignant melanoma; regional chemotherapy; debulking of disseminated abdominal tumors; intraperitoneal chemotherapy; intraoperative radiation; resection of difficult or unresectable tumors. 1)resection of difficult "unresectable" tumors which can be rendered resectable through special surgical techniques; e.g. retroperitoneal sarcoma limb preserving surgery and resection of extremity sarcomas. 20 surgical treatment of malignant melanoma, stages I-IV. Other research interestes: 1) Tumor Immunology; 2) Regional chemotherapy; 3) The development of a predictable, reliable chemosensityiveity assay in vitro.
