Research Summary:
Dr. Bart is dual board certified in Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and Emergency Medical Services (ABEM), with specialty training in EMS and Tactical Medicine. He completed his residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and received his fellowship training in EMS through SUNY at Buffalo. He currently works as an attending physician in the Emergency Department at the Erie County Medical Center. He is also the associate director of the EMS fellowship through SUNY at Buffalo. Dr. Bart is the Operational Medical Director for the Buffalo Fire Department and a specialized operational medical team member for several local law enforcement agencies. Dr. Bart is a subject matter expert/instructor for the National Center of Security and Preparedness – delivering operational training programs for response to high consequence domestic events through the New York State Preparedness training center. Dr. Bart is a member of the Tactical Emergency Medicine Section of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a certified medical director through both the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) and CONTOMS.

Research Summary:
Dr. Behrens is a clinical instructor for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, Erie County Medical Center (Level I Trauma Center) and the Buffalo VA Medical Center. Originally from Germany, he has been calling the Buffalo area home since 1999. He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and completed Residency in Emergency Medicine at UB. During residency he was heavily involved in the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association and after a year of being the program representative, he held the position of the first ever International Representative to EMRA.

Research Summary:
After attending medical school at the University of Connecticut, Samantha moved to Boston, MA where she completed her residency in emergency medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Upon graduating, she moved to Buffalo to be close to family and begin her career in emergency medicine. After working with a private EM group for 2 years, she joined UB|MD Emergency Medicine in 2015 which was a happy return to the world of academic medicine! In May of 2017, took on the role of medical student director. Overseeing all of the EM electives and courses, she enjoys an active role in the medical school, including as Phase 2 Committee Chair. When she isn't working clinically or in her role as student director, she is spending time in Elmwood Village with her husband, 3 children, and their golden retriever.

Dr. Clemency has been involved in prehospital care for nearly 20 years, beginning his career as a firefighter and emergency medical technician. Dr. Clemency completed both medical school and an MBA in health care administration in 4 years, before coming to Buffalo to continue his medical education. He is double boarded in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services. Dr. Clemency has quickly become a local, regional and national leader in prehospital care, education and research. His research focuses on all aspects of prehospital care, with a special interest in confirming or refuting existing paradigms.

Dr. DeFazio worked extensively as a community emergency physician prior to becoming a member of the teaching faculty affiliated with the emergency medicine residency here in Buffalo in 2000. He served as the Assistant Clinical Director of the Emergency Department at Buffalo General Hospital as well as the department Quality Improvement Coordinator until becoming the Residency Director in 2008. His primary interest lies in the education of emergency medicine residents.

Doctor Dice attended Ohio Northern University majoring in pharmacy prior to graduating from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo in 1977. Doctor Dice entered the US Army where he completed his Internship and Residency in Emergency Medicine. While in the Army he had responsibilites as a Brigade Surgeon, 4th Infantry Division; Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency, Brooke Army Medical Center; Department Chief, Department of Emergency Medicine, Darnall Army Hospital; Command Surgeon, Joint Sepcial Operations Command; Deputy Director Emergency Planning, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, The Pentagon; Commander, 5th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, and Dean, Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center. He served as the Department of Defense liaison to Emergency Support Function 8 following Hurricane Andrew; supported combat operations in Grenada and Panama; and led a Forward Surgical Team to Haiti. His interests are toxicology, public health emergency planning and response, and estreme events.

Research Summary:
A Buffalo native, Dr. Lynch began his career in emergency medicine by following in his grandfather’s footsteps as a volunteer firefighter. He continues his work in pre-hospital care by serving as medical director and flight physician for Mercy Flight along with several fire and police departments around Western New York. Following his undergraduate studies at the University at Buffalo, Dr. Lynch attended the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine as part of the inaugural class at the Bradenton, Florida campus. He completed an emergency medicine residency at the University at Buffalo, where he served as chief resident his final year. Dr. Lynch is a senior physician with UB|MD Emergency Medicine and holds academic appointments at the University at Buffalo, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has previously held academic appointments at Erie Community College and SUNY Upstate. He works clinically in the emergency departments of Kaleida Health and ECMC. Dr Lynch’s EMS interests are focused on critical care transport. In addition to working with Mercy Flight of Western New York, he also provides advisement to the Western Regional Emergency Medicine Advisory Committee (WREMAC) and has served as a regional representative to the New York State Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (SEMAC). Additionally, he serves as medical director for several fire departments as well as the Amherst Police Department’s Emergency Response Team. He has served as co-author of several pre-hospital related publications. He also has co-authored a textbook chapter in EMS Medicine. Dr. Lynch is a leader in addiction medicine. He serves on the Erie County Opioid Epidemic Task force along with the New York State Buprenorphine work group and is a medication assisted treatment specialist for the Erie County and New York State Departments of Health. He is also a technical advisor for the New York State Department of Health. He is works tirelessly to educate first responders, the medical community, and members of the public on naloxone, overdose, and treatment options. In fact, he has given lectures throughout New York State and various cities across the country. He has even presented internationally in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Lynch is actively involved in research and is leading a project to provide widespread access to buprenorphine and expedited linkage to treatment centers in the emergency departments across Western New York. With the support of the New York State Department of health, he has pioneered the development of a novel statewide electronic referral network known as the MATTERS Network (www.mattersnetwork.org) Dr. Lynch values time with his family and friends. He currently serves on the board of directors at the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County along with the 100 Club of Buffalo. He enjoys time outside cycling, skiing, and he is always looking for the next home renovation project to start! After nearly a year of training, he completed his first Iron Man 70.3 Race in the summer of 2019 and hopes to compete in many more!

Dr. Manka currently serves as the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Erie County Medical Center. He is a residency trained, board certified Emergency Physician, Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Along with overseeing the emergency department at Erie County Medical Center, he has been a member of the SUNY at Buffalo medical admissions committee and serves as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Manka’s research interests are focused on the assessment of trauma patients using ultrasonography as well as emergency medicine administrative issues such as quality improvement, patient flow, and patient satisfaction.

Research Summary:
Dr. O'Brien is a veteran critical care paramedic, EMS educator, and EMS physician. His clinical practice is split between shifts in the Emergency Department and operational medicine via field response. He provides medical direction to Erie Community College's EMS training programs and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team. Additionally, he is a Medical Director and Flight Physician for Mercy Flight of Western New York. Dr. O‘Brien‘s research interests center around extracorporeal life support (ECLS) and prehospital resuscitation. He and his colleagues in the Department of Emergency Medicine's EMS Division are currently working to enhance cardiac arrest survival in the City of Buffalo and its surrounding communities. He is a frequent speaker on topics such as out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, operational/austere medicine, and the ethics of emergency care. He is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and serves on national committees with both the National Association of EMS Physicians and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Research Summary:
Jeffrey J. Thompson, a native of Western New York, joined the faculty of emergency medicine upon completion of his residency in 2008. He completed his medical school and residency training through the SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, serving as chief resident during his final year. As a clinician, Dr. Thompson works in the emergency departments at the Buffalo General Medical Center and ECMC. Prior to this appointment he worked full-time for Professional Emergency Services at the Millard Fillmore hospitals. Through his work at Millard Fillmore Gates, he developed an interest in neurological emergencies, specifically stroke and TIA management and observation. He is also interested in public health, primarily as it relates to disease prevention and resource utilization. He is passionate about international medical missions, and has served on multiple overseas medical mission trips. From January to December 2018 he served with World Medical Mission as ER Director at MCM General Hospital and Myungsung Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and continues his educational and research involvement through regular return visits. Dr. Thompson greatly enjoys medical education, a passion he discovered during residency. This led him to become actively involved in the Emergency Medicine residency program where he is currently one of the Associate Program Directors. In additional to his clinical teaching he provides oversight to one of the resident reading sessions; organizes and administers Oral Board review cases; and lectures frequently to students, residents, and faculty. He completed the Physician Educator course through UB and the Royal College of Physicians in 2012.
