Specialty/Research Focus:
Maternal - Fetal Medicine; Obstetrics and Gynecology

Research Summary:
Born, raised and educated in Buffalo, I am proud of that heritage. Having had many opportunities to go elsewhere, I am extremely happy that I have resisted them. Now going on 40 years as a faculty member in our department, I look back proudly as having been one of our first fellows in Maternal Fetal Medicine and had much to do with that division’s development and growth. I have pursued rather eclectic interests related to faculty practice plan matters, Ob-Gyn leadership issues and professional liabilities. As an outgrowth of my many years as the President of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine Faculty Practice Plan, I used that position as an opportunity to work with the other SUNY Practice Plans to form our own medical professional liability insurance carrier which is licensed and domiciled in New York State. This company of which I have been an integral part of for over 25 years, has been an enormous help to our faculty in providing the best and most reasonably priced insurance available. I am extremely devoted to helping with practice plan issues and remain active on many committees related to our faculty practice. Having remained in Buffalo for my entire career has allowed me to achieve many accomplishments such as becoming Chair of District II of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Chair of the Board for Professional Medical Conduct and Chair of the Board of Academic Health Professionals Insurance Association. All of these accomplishments have been aided and abetted by my Department and the Medical School for which I am deeply appreciative.

Specialty/Research Focus:
Maternal - Fetal Medicine; Obstetrics and Gynecology

Research Summary:
My subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology is maternal-fetal medicine, which involves caring for both mothers and unborn babies in high-risk pregnancies. As division director for maternal-fetal medicine and medical director of the Perinatal Center, I am responsible for promoting education, research, and systems of care that maintain and improve the safety and health outcomes for the mothers and infants of Buffalo and Western New York. The Regional Perinatal Center at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo provides the advanced level of care needed for the pregnancies referred for consultation or transfer for serious, and often life-threatening, conditions. Efficient and effective communications and collaboration with all the western New York hospitals and physicians providing obstetrical services are vital system responsibilities for our regional perinatal center. My colleagues and I also help train the physicians and research scientists who will continue to provide health improvements into the future. I have been especially honored to receive awards for teaching physicians in training. My training and academic career has given me experience in a number of organizations and cultures that can be useful in designing, building, and managing complex systems of population based perinatal care. Most recently, I served as the initiating chair for hiring and designing a new department of obstetrics and gynecology for a women and children’s hospital being built in Doha, Qatar. Previous experience with the NY State Regional Perinatal System was extremely useful as I faced that task. I am pleased to be back in New York now and excited to participate in the current challenges and opportunities we have to develop a world class center of excellence in perinatal care here in Buffalo.
