Twelve faculty members with varied research and clinical expertise have joined the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences over the past several months.
Diane G. Schwartz, research associate professor, is a longtime health sciences librarian focused on instructing health care professionals and biomedical scientists about the importance of evidence-based practice, medical informatics and lifelong learning.
She has created many educational programs to ensure that patients and families have access to quality, reliable, understandable health information.
Schwartz holds a master’s degree in library science from Queens College.
Awais Ahmed, MD, assistant professor.
Ajlan Atasoy, MD, assistant professor.
Bethany C. Calkins, MD, assistant professor, completed fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital-University of Rochester, where she also completed her residency in family medicine.
Calkins, who holds a master’s degree in medical management from the University of Rochester, received both a BS degree and an MD from UB.

Jeong Min Kim, MD, assistant professor.
Vincent C. Lee, MD, assistant professor.
Rajeev Sharma, MD, assistant professor, is a board-certified endocrinologist with special interests in diabetes, thyroid and cancer-associated endocrinological issues.
A fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, Sharma completed fellowship training in endocrinology and diabetes at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Prior to joining UB’s faculty, he was an assistant professor of medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University’s Joslin Diabetes Center.
Yongho Bae, PhD, assistant professor, studies arterial stiffness, seeking to determine what happens to cells during this process and how it contributes to cardiovascular disease.
Bae earned his PhD in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
