Evan Calkins, MD, who served for 16 years as the first chair of the UB Department of Medicine, received the Network in Aging’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award.

After stepping down as chair in 1977, Calkins became director of the department’s Division of Geriatrics, only the seventh such division in the country at that time. Under his leadership, the division’s Fellowship Program became the largest in the country and, by the time he retired in 1989, ten percent of all fellowship-trained geriatricians in the country had come through the UB program.

During his tenure as division head, Calkins collaborated with community leaders committed to enhancing the care of older people and eventually formed the Network in Aging, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Calkins was invited to be a member of the National Advisory Council of the National Institute on Aging and also to serve as consultant to a number of other universities interested in developing programs in this field.
