Neuroscience Students Participate in Brain Awareness Week

Members of the UB Neuroscience Graduate Student Association took part in Brain Awareness Week, a community outreach program aimed at raising awareness about the brain.

Enthusiastic Students Participate in Hands-on Exercises

On April 2, the following students went to Heim Middle School in Williamsville and Highgate Heights Elementary School in Buffalo to teach young students about the brain using fun and educational demonstrations.

During the visits, they showed students human, sheep and rat brain specimens, helped them look at brain slides through a microscope, demonstrated how attention and perception work and provided interactive examples of how our senses integrate information.

“The demonstrations were the first real exposure to neuroscience for many of these students, and they were extremely enthusiastic, curious and engaged,” said Thomas Covey, president of the Neuroscience GSA and a PhD student in the Neuroscience Program.

“It was a great experience for the graduate students, as well, and it is an event we always look forward to.”
