Kenneth D. Pearsen, MD, co-founder and former president and chief executive officer of Great Lakes Medical Imaging (GLMI), has been appointed chair of the Department of Radiology.

Pearsen currently serves as radiology chief of service for Kaleida Health and chief of radiology at Buffalo General Medical Center.

Expanding Research, Educational and Clinical Programs

In making the announcement, Michael E. Cain, MD, vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, said “Dr. Pearsen has the administrative, scientific, clinical, leadership and visionary skills needed to move the Department of Radiology forward.”

Under Pearsen’s leadership, the department plans to expand its translational and clinical research programs, re-establish its graduate medical education and mentored research training programs, and develop and align a comprehensive clinical program at Great Lakes Health and in the community.

Additionally, 35 new full-time faculty members are joining the department of radiology

Pearsen has also been named president of the UBMD Radiology practice plan. He noted he has been a hospital-based radiologist and educator throughout his career and is eager to give back to the Western New York community, where he has lived and worked for the past 25 years. He is quick to note that it will be a true team effort.

“I am privileged to have as my partners among the best-trained physicians in the country from programs including Harvard, Georgetown, University of Rochester and Stanford,” he said.

Pearsen is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Neuroradiology, with added qualifications in vascular and interventional radiology and neuroradiology.

Before founding GLMI, he was president of Ide Radiology Group in Rochester, where he also was clinical assistant professor of radiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center and chief of radiology at Highland Hospital.

Earned Medical Degree from Columbia University

Pearsen earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He did his medical residency in diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also completed a fellowship in neuroradiology.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Cain also thanked Angelo M. DelBalso, MD, DDS, who has served as chair of radiology since 1995, for his leadership. DelBalso has returned to the department’s faculty as a full-time professor.
