“Building on the success of our previous plan, the department’s new strategic plan will facilitate continued growth of the department in targeted areas of research and clinical care,” says president and CEO Anne B. Curtis, MD, SUNY Distinguished Professor, Charles and Mary Bauer Professor and chair of medicine.

“It will also enable us to develop and adapt to upcoming changes in the health care environment,” she says.

Integrity, Integration and Innovation Are Core Values

The department’s outlined mission is to focus on being a national leader in providing exemplary integrated primary and specialty patient care, training outstanding future physicians, and conducting interdisciplinary research to expand biomedical knowledge and discover innovative treatments and cures.

The core values of the plan will encompass integrity, integration and innovation while achieving excellence through relentless dedication to quality, performance and superior outcomes.

Serving as Regional Leader to Improve Health Care

The five main goals of the plan are as follows:

  1. Enhance quality and core competencies by ensuring exemplary quality of care and building the department’s research and clinical capacity in strategically important areas.
  2. Strengthen scholarship and training by developing a sustainable culture of research across the department; aggressively increasing research funding; and enhancing the quality of clinical internal medicine training for medical students, residents and fellows.
  3. Engage the community by strengthening relationships with community stakeholders to address high priority unmet needs in clinical care, education and scholarship as well as grow the primary and specialty care network.
  4. Become a workplace of choice by improving physician and staff wellness and by attracting and retaining outstanding academic faculty and staff.
  5. Secure the future by maximizing patient access and investing in marketing to increase the reach and reputation of the department by proactively addressing health care trends and future needs.

Achieving these goals will help the department serve as a regional leader in improving health care throughout the community. The goals will also help the department expand its specialty clinical services in internal medicine, geriatrics and medicine-pediatrics as well as develop its subspecialties, including:

  • allergy
  • cardiology
  • endocrinology, metabolism, and diabetes
  • gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition
  • infectious diseases
  • nephrology
  • pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine
  • rheumatology
