Approximately 900 students from the health professions (dental medicine, nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy) as well as social work, law and management will come together to learn about the opioid epidemic and the importance of interprofessional care to tackle this public health problem.
Dr. Gale Burstein will discuss the opioid epidemic in Erie County and across the U.S. Dr. Rick Blondell, a nationally recognized addictions expert, and Mr. Nick Gazzolli, an experienced addictions counselor, will discuss the management of patients. Students will then break into small groups to learn about team-based care and discuss the problem of opioid dependence. To accommodate the large number of students, we will hold three identical sessions.
