Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series: Bacterial Toxins for the Treatment of Breast Cancer; Yasser Heakal, PhD, Assistant Professor, D'Youville College School of Pharmacy
Despite the recent advances in breast cancer treatment, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a serious health problem with poor prognosis and limited therapeutic interventions. Chemotherapy remains the first-line choice for the treatment of TNBC, but often associated with chemo-resistance. In this seminar, we will present the results of screening several toxins including cholera toxin (CT) and the members of the bacterial type II heat-labile enterotoxin family (LT-IIa, LT-IIb, and LT-IIc) for their ability to induce cell death selectively in triple-negative breast cancer cells. Additionally, the molecular mechanisms involved in their unique pharmacological effects will be presented and discussed.
