Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs
Vanessa Barnabei, MD, PhD, is associate dean for faculty affairs and professor with tenure in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Her focus in faculty affairs is on faculty engagement, mentoring and promotion. She is particularly interested in gender-based disparities in academic medicine and in health care.
Barnabei has maintained an active interest in faculty development with experience as a department chair, departmental mentoring and promotion advocate, and on rank and promotion committees. She is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Faculty Affairs.
Barnabei received both her PhD in genetics and MD from the University of Virginia and completed her obstetrics and gynecology training at Northwestern University in Chicago. Throughout her career she has been involved in teaching medical students and residents, clinical care of women throughout the life cycle and clinical research on a variety of women’s health issues. She has received awards for teaching, patient care and patient satisfaction.
She served as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2012-2020. She is also co-chair of the New York State Maternal Mortality Review Board, instituted in 2019, and on the board of the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network.
