The young adult population is growing in Buffalo so much so that it is outpacing the national growth rate. The number of 25- to 34-year-olds relocating here continues to increase, landing Buffalo a spot at #12 on TIME’s 2017 list for the top 25 cities where millennials are moving.

Buffalo has one of the most active art communities in New York State outside of New York City.

The “City of Good Neighbors” is a testament to the sense of community here. Buffalo has a hometown feel in a city setting. People are friendly and kind. If you ask — and even if you don’t — people are ready and willing to help a stranger.

Did you know the Erie Canal ended in Buffalo? Now known as Canalside, the area is home to a park with activities all year long. Hire a pedal boat, take part in yoga, or munch a beef-on-weck (Buffalo’s other iconic food) and enjoy a concert.

Chicago is the only major city in the country that can claim it has more Frank Lloyd Wright buildings than Buffalo.

Buffalo’s “Queen City” nickname references it being the largest and most prosperous city along the Great Lakes in the end of the 1800’s to the beginning of the 1900’s. It was at one point the second largest trade port in the North after New York City.

In 1881, Maria Love established America’s first day-care center for the children of working women. Called Fitch Creche, it opened in a building on Swan Street donated by dry-goods merchant Benjamin Fitch.

President William McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo while attending the Pan American Exposition of 1901 and President Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated here at the Wilcox Mansion on Delaware Avenue that is now a museum.

There are Cheerios factories in Iowa, Georgia and Buffalo, New York. In Buffalo, the General Mills factory and its 400 workers churn out 62 million boxes of original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios every year. Oftentimes, the downtown area will smell like Cheerios and you can purchase T-shirts that say “My city smells like Cheerios.”

The Anchor Bar in Buffalo was home to the original buffalo wing, a popular dish now found across the entire country.

Ball canning jars — Ball is a brand of Mason jars, which were invented by John Landis Mason in 1858. Ball Manufacturing Company was started with the purchase of a small company in Buffalo.

Wilson Greatbatch invented the implantable pacemaker in 1958 in Buffalo. He began working on the invention while he was an electrical engineering professor at the University at Buffalo.

Did you know Buffalo has the distinction of being the only city in America to still boast buildings designed by all three American architectural giants: Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson and Frank Lloyd Wright? It is also home to a large collection of Art Deco and Beaux-Arts style buildings, including City Hall.

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Buffalo can be tracked on RENTCafé. Compared to larger cities, you are getting much more space for much less money. Rent varies from neighborhood to neighborhood.

Millionaires’ Mile on Delaware Avenue got its name from the huge number of millionaires living on the street in mansions built between 1890 and World War I, when Buffalo had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the United States.

Windshield wipers — Invented by Mary Anderson in 1902 while riding a streetcar in New York City. Many people are credited with inventing different early versions of the windshield wiper. John R. Oishei, for whom Oishei Children’s Hospital is named, formed the Tri-Continental Corporation in 1917. This company introduced the first windscreen wiper for the slotted, two-piece windscreens found on many of the automobiles of the time.

Buffalo became one of the first cities to have widespread street lamps in 1886.

No summer days in Buffalo have ever hit triple digit temperatures, as the highest local temperature ever recorded was 99 degrees on Aug. 27, 1948.

Air conditioning — The first modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier.

Buffalo is a foodie town where there are hundreds and hundreds of restaurants. Burmese, Thai, Ethiopian and other ethnic groups have found refuge in this city and brought their cuisines along with them. And young chefs from around the country, attracted by low real estate prices, have opened innovative restaurants here. There’s even an amazing Food Truck gathering at Larkin Square (home of the old Larkin Soap factory) every Tuesday evening during the summer. Trucks come from all around the region – and so do the diners!

Some people refer to Buffalo as the “Nickel City” due to the bison on the back of the Indian Head nickel.
