Mary Canty, Richard Izzo, Brentyn Mendel and Yiyun Zhou — all students in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences — are four of 25 University at Buffalo students honored as Western New York Prosperity Fellows for 2017-2018. 

Gabriela K. Popescu, PhD, professor of biochemistry, has been elected chair of the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS).

Anthony A. Campagnari, PhD ’84, has received a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities and has been inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Microbiology.

John E. Tomaszewski, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences, has been named a State University of New York Distinguished Professor, the highest faculty rank in the SUNY system.

Two residents and two fellows received honors for outstanding poster presentations at the 20th Annual Graduate Medical Education Scholarly Exchange Day.

Leonard H. Epstein, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of pediatrics, has been selected to receive the Hoebel Prize for Creativity by the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior.

Steven J. Fliesler, PhD, UB Distinguished Professor and Meyer H. Riwchun Endowed Chair Professor of ophthalmology, has been elected to a leadership post in the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

Margarita L. Dubocovich, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of pharmacology and toxicology, has received a UB Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Distinguished Research Mentor Award.

Peter G. Bradford, PhD, associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology, has been inducted as a fellow into the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics’ (ASPET) Academy of Pharmacology Educators.

Two professional staff members in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences have received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences celebrated scientific achievements, outstanding service and significant teaching contributions during its 2017 Faculty and Staff Recognition Awards event May 18.

A dozen faculty members, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology participated in the Experimental Biology 2017 meeting.

Thomas A. Russo, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, has received the 2017 Stockton Kimball Award for consistent academic accomplishment, significant research discoveries and contributions to the progress of the university and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Mark D. Parker, PhD, assistant professor of physiology and biophysics, has received the 2017 Cell and Molecular Physiology Section (CaMPS) New Investigator Award from the American Physiological Society (APS).

Erik Van Roey, a graduate of the master’s program in genetics, genomics and bioinformatics (GGB), has been awarded a bioinformatics fellowship to conduct research for a year at U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) laboratories in Atlanta.
