What's Tech Squad?

You’ve probably seen UB Tech Squad zipping around campus in their all-electric smart vehicles. Tech Squad is a free tech support team just for UB students, and they’ll meet you anywhere on campus to help with anything from simple password resets to diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing your devices and more. You can book an appointment for free on the UBIT website.

Tech Squad is also active in UB’s public computing sites, where they administer printing and public computers. In addition to booking an appointment online, you can also get help from the walk-up Tech Squad desk on the third floor of Silverman Library in Capen Hall.

What can Tech Squad help with?

  • Figuring out what’s wrong

Is your laptop running slow? Taking too long to turn on? Maybe it isn’t turning on at all.

Tech Squad can help with that. Book an appointment, or bring your device to the Tech Squad desk in Silverman Library, and they can run a free diagnostic check to figure out what’s going on, and how to fix it.

  • Downloading and installing software

UB students can download Microsoft Office and other software for free from the UBIT website—but you knew that, right?

Tech Squad can install and update software on your devices, including updates to your operating system. If you ever try to install or update software and get an error, Tech Squad can fix the error and reinstall the software to make sure it’s working correctly.

  • Getting your devices connected

Trouble getting your phone to connect to eduroam Wi-Fi? Maybe you’re getting your gaming console connected to ResNet. Either way, Tech Squad are experts in UB’s various networks—they’ll make sure you get connected, and stay connected, to the right network for your device.

  • Resetting your UBITName password

Sure, you’ve been meaning to set up recovery options for your UBITName account. But you never got around to it—then someone hacked your account and locked you out.

First, if you think your account has been hacked, you should report it to the UBIT Help Center. From there, Tech Squad can help you reset your password and get back into your account.

  • Getting rid of viruses

UB provides anti-virus and firewall software for your devices, which you should download and install as soon as possible. That’ll help keep you safe—but no device is ever 100% secure, and new viruses and vulnerabilities are being discovered all the time.

If you see any signs your device is infected with a virus, take it to the Tech Squad and they’ll give it a complete scan. They’ll even remove the viruses and update your operating system if necessary.

  • …and almost anything else

Tech Squad can fix the most common problems with your devices. There are some things they can’t do, however, like fix cracked screens, broken buttons or other physical hardware problems.

But, no matter what your tech problem is, Tech Squad will figure out what you need to do to fix it. If they can’t fix it themselves, they can recommend someone in the area who can.

That means there’s literally no reason not to contact the Tech Squad when you’re having tech trouble—they’re free, convenient and can find you help with your problem no matter what it is.
