Goals and Strategies

Goal 1: Prepare students to become exceptional clinicians to advance the health of our community and beyond


  1. Evaluate and implement modern curricula and teaching modules.
  2. Ensure faculty are equipped to educate physicians of the future.
  3. Maintain and refine systems for continuous evaluation of instruction.
  4. Provide robust student advising and mentorship programs.
  5. Bolster interprofessional educational opportunities for medical students.

Goal 2: Foster an environment that creates and supports outstanding educators


  1. Establish the Academy for Advancing Medical Educators.
  2. Strengthen faculty succession planning.
  3. Identify, support and incentivize outstanding medical educators.
  4. Elevate engagement between volunteer faculty and the Jacobs School full-time faculty.

Goal 3: Ensure that all medical students graduate with the expertise to analyze and integrate advances in medicine


  1. Design a toolbox that includes relevant clinical research topics to be covered in the undergraduate medical education curriculum.
  2. Integrate research opportunities into medical students’ pre-clinical and clinical educational experiences.

Goal 4: Increase the number of students who pursue careers as physician scientists


  1. Establish a medical school track for students with an interest in academic medicine and science.
  2. Increase awareness of and involvement in research opportunities among all medical students.

Goal 5: Instill a culture of professionalism, respect and commitment for patients, learners and peers


  1. Create an inclusive environment where diversity is respected and the impact of unconscious bias is minimized.
  2. Recognize that faculty are role models in education, clinical care and research.
  3. Foster an environment of accountability in which everyone is responsible for the quality of care.
