Buffalo has been an excellent place for me to grow and advance my career as a vision researcher and educator. The SUNY system and UB, the top-ranked public university in New York State, offer exceptional support for research and scholarship. Resources such as Sponsored Projects Services (SPS) provide invaluable assistance with grant preparation, submission, and management, which is critical for securing funding and sustaining successful research programs.
UB also offers outstanding research infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories and core facilities that support a wide range of scientific investigations. These resources include advanced animal research facilities, imaging and flow cytometry cores, next-generation sequencing services, and proteomics platforms, all of which are integral to the work conducted in my laboratory.
Most importantly, UB fosters a vibrant and collaborative academic environment. The Department of Ophthalmology, in particular, is highly collegial, with supportive and engaged colleagues who actively collaborate and contribute to each other's success. This strong sense of community has made Buffalo an ideal place to build and sustain a productive research career.
I am honored to have received several prestigious awards in recent years, including the UB Exceptional Scholar Award for Sustained Achievement and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, which recognize outstanding academic achievement and innovative accomplishments across a broad range of scholarly disciplines.
My research focuses on understanding and treating eye diseases that can lead to vision loss, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related retinal disorders. For more than 20 years, my laboratory has studied how retinal neural cells and blood vessels respond to chronic stress conditions during aging and disease. Our work has identified key biological pathways that help protect retinal cells from damage, providing promising targets for developing new therapies to preserve vision.
In 2024, I was named a UB Distinguished Professor, one of the university’s highest academic honors, recognizing individuals with national and international distinction in their fields. I am also a Gold Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), an honor awarded to distinguished members for exceptional contributions to vision research and the scientific community.
My passion for basic research on retinal diseases grew directly from my medical training and the experiences I have had caring for patients. As an ophthalmologist and retina specialist, I have had the privilege of working with many individuals whose lives have been profoundly affected by devastating retinal disorders.
Too often, I encountered patients facing vision loss from conditions for which effective treatments were limited or unavailable. Even today, many retinal diseases remain among the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Witnessing the profound impact of these diseases on patients' lives inspired me to pursue a career in scientific research.
My goal is to better understand the fundamental mechanisms and root causes of retinal injury and disease, as such knowledge is essential for developing innovative therapies for currently untreatable conditions. This passion has also motivated me to become a dedicated educator, committed to training the next generation of physician-scientists and researchers, while contributing professional service to advance scientific discovery and promote excellence in research.
