Do you use your UBmail (@buffalo.edu) for accounts not related to the university? If so, now is the time to switch to a non-UB email address for personal communications, subscriptions, and services.
According to UB’s Central Email Policy and Computing, Network and Telecommunications Usage Policy, UB students, faculty and staff should only use their UBmail (@buffalo.edu) for university-related communications. UBmail should not be used as a login for non-UB accounts, such as streaming services, online retailers, social media platforms, and other personal services.
Using your UBmail address for personal accounts can create challenges if you lose access to your university email account.
Once you lose access to UBmail, it becomes harder to update login credentials, recover passwords, or manage account information on any personal accounts connected to your UBmail.
If a non-UB website or service you use is compromised in a security breach and your UB account is linked to it, your university account could also be at risk.
Protect your UB account by creating a strong, unique password not associated with any other account. Keep your password private and don’t share it with anyone, not even friends and family.
For personal communications outside of UB, sign up for a non-UB email address, such as Gmail or Outlook.
Once you have a personal email account, update your email address used for services, subscriptions and accounts including banking, social media, utilities and streaming to your non-UB email address.
Students, faculty and staff can contact the UBIT Help Center at (716) 645-3542, email ubithelp@buffalo.edu or submit a ticket at buffalo.edu/ubit/help with technology at UB. The UB Tech Squad is also available to meet students anywhere on North or South Campus free for technology assistance.
