I matched in a transitional year internship at Akron General Hospital (outside Cleveland Ohio) which allowed me to rotate through Surgical, Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology rotations as a resident to help me decide on my final Speciality- Anesthesiology. I then went outside the match for my residency applications and took a position at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where I completed my training in 2006. I then completed a year of speciality fellowship training in pediatric anesthesiology at Washington University in St Louis/ St Louis Children's Hospital before returning to Houston in 2007. I currently work as a pediatric anesthesiologist in an academic department at Texas Children's Hospital/ Baylor College of Medicine. -Katrin Campbell
It's very stressful and expensive deciding on a specialty, planning Sub I, interviewing. Ortho is also very competitive and it's hard to know which programs to focus on. I recall how expensive it was when applying to residency and flying all over the country for interviews (especially in dermatology where you have to apply broadly) and there is no extra money in your funds as a medical student to try to pay for all of this. It was through the kindness of family and friends and colleagues that I was able to keep the expenses slightly lower.
