“Training in our fellowship, you’ll care for patients at two distinct clinical training sites, gaining proficiency with a broad variety of pain management techniques,” says Thomas C. Suchy, MD, program director.
Our pain medicine fellowship is an American Board of Anesthesiology-approved training program. Our curriculum offers a wide exposure to acute, cancer and chronic pain.
The University at Buffalo Pain Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited, American Board of Anesthesiology-approved training program dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders in interventional pain medicine. Rebuilt under the new leadership of Dr. Thomas Suchy and Dr. Michael Farrell, the fellowship is evolving into a nationally recognized destination for hands-on interventional pain training.
As the only comprehensive hospital-based pain center in Western New York, our program provides fellows with broad exposure to acute, cancer-related, and chronic pain conditions in a high-volume, multidisciplinary environment. Fellows receive intensive clinical and procedural training alongside board-certified interventional pain physicians while working closely with specialists in psychology, neurology, physiatry, rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, and other disciplines essential to comprehensive pain care.
The fellowship accepts two fellows annually, allowing for personalized mentorship, exceptional hands-on experience, and individualized professional development. Fellows are supported in scholarly activity through dedicated research opportunities, quality improvement initiatives, academic presentations, and attendance at national pain medicine meetings.
Upon graduation, fellows are expected to demonstrate proficiency in a wide rage of advanced interventional procedures, including:
● Epidural Steroid Injections
● Radiofrequency Ablation
● Neurolytic Blocks
● Spinal Cord and Dorsal Root Ganglio (DRG) Stimulation
● Peripheral Nerve Stimulation
● Vertebral Augmentation and Kyphoplasty
● Minimally Invasive Spine
● Advanced Neuromodulation Techniques
● Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Nerve Interventions
● Emerging and Next-Generation Interventional Pain Technologies
Our program participates in the ERAS fellowship match and all interested applicants should apply in the ERAS system.
