This program recognizes moments in teaching that exemplify the use of effective teaching methods that make a big difference in learning and the learning environment.
The program gives learners an opportunity to acknowledge best practices in teaching strategies they experience in formal and informal learning environments.
Students and residents may submit examples throughout the year.
Each month we recognize one moment along with associated teaching tips and educational research to inspire tweaks or small changes in the way you approach your teaching, respond to student questions, deliver your next grand rounds and more.
Dr. Cherr did a phenomenal job in helping me improve the way I approach thinking about how we come to answers in medicine.… For example, when he asked me if a patient's wound appeared to be infected, he moved past my initial answer of a simple "no," to question me further about erythema, temperature, edema, pain, demarcation, purulence, and smell of the site. He also had me talk through why each of those points would or would not suggest infection of the wound. If I didn't have an adequate answer to one of the parts of his question, he would then ask me another question that helped lead me to why that component was important, without giving it away. All the while he made it clear that he was asking the questions not because he didn't trust my original answer, but because he thought it was important to ensure that I had an understanding of all of the components.
We invite you to submit your moment of excellence in education using the form below.
Please note: This program aims to recognize teaching moments, activities, or strategies rather than the teacher as an individual. If you would like to nominate someone for their contributions to education, please consider nominating them for the Siegel Award.
