Professional Summary:

Our lab is focused on studies of retinal degenerations caused by metabolic defects in isoprenoid biosynthesis, particularly dyslipidemias involving defective cholesterol metabolism (e.g., Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome) as well as defects in dolichol synthesis (e.g., RP59). Ww employ pharmacological and genetically altered animal models of human hereditary diseases. Current studies are focused on the role of lipid and protein oxidation in the underlying mechanisms of photoreceptor cell death in such retinal degenerations, using a combination of genomic, proteomic, and lipidomic approaches. We also study the effects of acoustic blast overpressure on retinal structure and function, and possible therapeutic interventions for blast-induced retinal injury. Research supported by NIH and VA grants.
