Clinical Assistant Professor
My inpatient clinical practice is based at Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC) and Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) where I care for patients with the entire spectrum of kidney-related issues including, but not limited to acute kidney injury, fluid/electrolyte disorders, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and dialysis. Many of the patients I see in the hospital become my long-term patients after they are discharged. I continue to care for, and follow up with them at outpatient clinics, including the Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) and at the UBMD Medicine/Pediatric clinic on Linwood Avenue in Buffalo.
I am the hemodialysis unit director at BGMC. As such, I work as a liaison between the Kaleida staff and nephrologists to ensure that our dialysis patients receive excellent care. I also work closely with the hospital’s Department of Pharmacy to develop internal protocols for administering medications such as erythropoietin (EPO) for dialysis patients and preventing kidney injury in certain patient populations (e.g., patients who are at risk for iodinated contrast injury).
I am also the director for inpatient nephrology at RPCI. In this role, I facilitate an effective working relationship between Roswell’s hematology/oncology physicians and our UBMD nephrologists, ensuring our patients the best possible care from this highly skilled and knowledgeable team of specialists. I am also working with the RPCI intensive care unit to establish a continuous renal replacement program with the use of the Nxstage hemodialysis machine, a state-of-the-art technology to treat patients with end-stage renal disease, acute kidney failure and fluid overload.
As a faculty member of UB’s medical school, I am actively engaged in both clinical and didactic teaching and am responsible for educating medical students, internal medicine residents and nephrology fellows rotating through our nephrology services. I am deeply committed to teaching excellence and have enrolled in the UB Royal College of Physicians Educator Program as a way to continually evolve as an educator.
