Specialty/Research Focus

Urology

Professional Summary:

My clinical practice focuses on male and female genitourinary (genitals and urinary system) reconstruction, as well as minimally invasive and general urology. This includes the surgical and non-surgical management of:

1. Vaginal prolapse (also known as female pelvic prolapse, vaginal bulges or vaginal hernias).

2. Reconstruction or repair of urethral strictures (scarring of the urethra).

3. Management, prevention and treatment of kidney stones. This includes minimally invasive surgery, removing or breaking up stones with a laser, teaching proper diet and fluid management, etc)

3. Female and male incontinence (problems with unwanted urine leakage or urine accidents). Treatment options include medications, pelvic floor muscle training, Botox injection of the bladder, implantation of a bladder pacemaker/Interstim), bladder or urethral slings (using your own tissue or synthetic material, and others.

4. Female voiding dysfunction (for example, problems or complaints related to passing urine too frequently, too often during the day or night, trouble passing urine, etc)

5. Male voiding dysfunction (for example, problems or complaints related to passing urine too frequently, too often during the day or night, trouble passing urine, not being able to pass urine at all, etc). These issues can be managed with medications or surgeries. Surgeries include minimally invasive surgeries such as laser vaporization of the prostate (laser TURP) for those with enlarged prostates whose symptoms are not well controlled with medications.

6. Female and male urinary tract infections.

7. Female and male urinary fistulas (abnormal connections between the bladder or urethra and the bowel, vagina, skin, etc.)

8. Neurourology (bladder issues caused by spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson‘s disease and other disorders).

9. Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgeries for cancer or non-cancer conditions. For example, nephrectomy (kidney removal), partial nephrectomy (removal of part of a kidney), ureteropelvic junction repair / pyeloplasty, ureteric stricture / scar repair, etc.

10. Other male genitourinary conditions such as hidden/buried penis, scrotal enlargement, erectile dysfunction (trouble with erections), etc.

11. Other general urology issues for both men and women.

I trained and then practiced as a pharmacist for 5 years in the province of Ontario, Canada, before going to medical school at Queen‘s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. For my Urology residency, I trained at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, a center with a renowned training program in laparoscopic urological surgery. I underwent further sub-specialty surgical training in male and female genital-urinary reconstruction at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia with Drs. Gerald Jordan, Stephen Schlossberg and Kurt McCammon.
