Professional Summary:

I am an interventional and clinical cardiologist at the Buffalo VA Medical Center (Buffalo VAMC) after having been in private practice for over 25 years. The focus of my practice is the cardiac catheterization laboratory, though I also see outpatients in the cardiology clinic and perform inpatient clinical consultations in the hospital. I care for individuals with a spectrum of cardiovascular disease, including patients with stable coronary disease, acute coronary syndromes, valvular diseases and cardiomyopathies.

I participated as a site investigator in over 100 multicenter clinical research trials. My particular research interests are in studies of lipid management and preventive cardiology, intravascular ultrasound and plaque regression, critical care pathway development and application and outcomes research in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes. My current research involvement includes studies on lipid therapy, novel congestive heart pharmacologic therapy and atrial fibrillation in cancer patients. I am also involved in a supportive role with a study of antibiotic therapy and the management of peripheral arterial disease.

I enjoy teaching and have taught throughout my private practice career and continue at the VA. I teach cardiology fellows in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and in the cardiology clinic during initial cardiology consultations and follow-up outpatient care. I also teach fellows, medical residents and medical students during consultative rounds in the hospital.

  • Associate Professor of Medicine, SUNY at Buffalo (2012-present)
  • Associate Professor, Medicine, Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center (2012-present)
  • Private Practice, Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiovascular division of the group, Buffalo Cardiology and Pulmonary Associates, PC (1987–2012)
  • Assistant Clincal Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, SUNY at Buffalo (1985–2012)

Awards and Honors:

  • Mentor, Teacher and Role Model (2018)
  • President of the VA Medical and Dental Staff (2017)
  • Professional recognition (2012)
  • Kaleida Health 2003 Annual Report (2004)
  • Buffalo Physician Magazine (2003)

Research Expertise:

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome Treatment: I have been a primary investigator in 13 acute coronary syndrome clinical trials, primarily assessing the efficacy of novel therapies in this regard. My publications in this area of medicine included my being author or co-author on 10 publications. Additionally, I was the first in the Western New York to introduce the concept of using guideline based order sets (the Acute Coronary Syndrome Treatment Strategies: ACSETS) to standardize the treatment of acute coronary syndrome patients with evidence based therapies at a time when such protocols were not in use. I co-developed the order sets and implemented them in the Kaleida Health System. I developed the research protocol to assess the outcomes of ACSETS on patient care and I was the first author on the publication detailing the outcomes of this patient care initiative.
  • Cardiovascular Risk Factor Management: I was a participant in the "27th Bethesda Conference: Matching the Intensity of Risk Factor Management with the Hazard for Coronary Disease Events," JACC 1996; 27(5): 957-1047.
  • Coronary Intervention: I was the major contributor to the development and direction of the interventional cardiology program at Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, which had the best quality of care record in the area. This included establishing the initial care protocols and over time doing the protocol revisions in the cardiac cath lab and the step-down unit, formally and informally providing instruction to the nursing staffs in the lab and in the unit, taking the lead with innovative therapies (including directional atherectomy, rotational atherectomy and ablative atherectomy with laser) and being involved with quality monitoring. I was the lone cardiologist performing peripheral intervention in the cardiac cath lab. Additionally, I brought numerous research protocols into the lab. I was given the honor of performing the first case in the GVI (Gates Vascular Institute) when it opened.
  • Coumadin Clinic Director: In 1995, i developed evidence based protocols which served as the basis to form a Coumadin Clinic in my private practice, which I managed until I left the practice. When I left in 2012, the clinic census was over 1500 patients.
  • Lipid Management: While in private practice, I have been a primary investigator in 40 clinical trials in lipid management and have been author or co-author in six publications. I had developed a database for clinical research purposes with the Lipid Clinic that I had developed and had run for patient care, while at Buffalo Cardiology. At its peak, I managed the lipids of 2000 patients/year. Students, residents and providers from other medical practices spent time in my clinic. I helped develop lipid clinics in Erie, PA, Rochester, NY and New York City.
