  • The Patient Safety/Quality Improvement Subcommittee of the Graduate Medical Education Committee had not been meeting regularly when I was appointed Chair. I oversaw the appointment of new members from all hospital sites (physicians and other patient safety experts), and included residents on the committee. Rejuvenation of this committee was the project for the AAMC Leadership Education and Development Fellowship. I led the development of a resident quality/safety committee (UB Resident Fellow Quality Improvement Safety Committee). The committee, started in 2017, developed a mission statement and goals. In its first year, the committee held multiple Grand Rounds events and has started multiple quality improvement projects. In its 2nd year (2018-2019), the resident leaders plan for monthly meetings with an increased emphasis on QI project presentations by faculty and trainees. • I was appointed General Surgery Program Director (and resigned as Clerkship Director) on the day after the medical school LCME site visit. The General Surgery Program had been placed on probationary accreditation, with 21 citations. As program director, I worked with our GME office to develop a 120 page response to the proposed citations. After the subsequent RRC site visit, the General Surgery Program received accreditation with commendation (and no citations). During 4 years as Program Director, I oversaw the following changes in the residency program: Appointed two new associate program directors. Hired a new training program administrator. Updated resident manual. Updated faculty manual. Updated resident code of conduct. Served as a faculty mentor for resident leadership committee. Created new resident rotations at 4 hospitals (including goals/objectives, infrastructure, evaluations, appointment of rotation directors, insure compliance with ACGME and DOH regulations. Oversaw development and implementation of the Clinical Competency Committee. Created new on-line evaluations of residents, faculty, and rotations Change/clarify roles and expectations for residents at all sites - PGY1 residents-responsible for ward, daily rounds with faculty; PGY2 residents-responsible for consults (see consults, discuss directly with faculty). Education for residents and faculty regarding the change in roles and expectations. Updated call schedules at all sites - Changes made to facilitate continuity of patient care, improved feedback on performance. Change in expectations for patient care teams - All consults and operative cases covered by members of the primary team, rather than cross-coverage. Efforts to improve resident morale - Address "class system" between categorical and non-categorical PGY1 residents. Regular opportunities for resident feedback to program faculty ("Town Hall" sessions, Resident Leadership Committee) Improved communication between junior residents and consultants, nurses, allied health professionals. ASCOM phones for PGY1 and PGY2 residents at BGMC. Facilitate contact between faculty and PGY1, easier to make rounds on floor, discuss patient issues. Change in expectations for resident patient-care teams to improve continuity of care and feedback - All consults and operative cases covered by members of team. Cross-coverage or coverage by "on call" team discouraged. Instituted multidisciplinary team discharge planning rounds at one site (Nursing staff, physical/occupational therapists, social workers) Prioritized methods to obtain and utilize resident input for decisions and program changes-Call schedules at multiple sites developed by residents instead of administrative staff, Changes made to basic science conference based upon resident feedback and suggestions. Social media developed to facilitate communication and improve morale: Closed Facebook group for residents to discuss programmatic matters, etc.; Open UB Residency page for publicity (list of residents, educational highlights), morale (photos of residents receiving teaching and research awards, giving Grand Rounds talks, etc.), Twitter account to publicize residency and departmental highlights. New and updated content on Residency electronic evaluation (E*Value) home page. Educational innovation: Development and implementation of team based learning program to improve medical knowledge. Development and implementation of intern boot camp. Created new educational program for residents at educators-teaching skills, giving/receiving feedback, giving effective presentations Integrated education curriculum for alignment of weekly reading, basic science conferences, faculty lectures, and case-based discussions. Implemented new program-wide policy for enhanced feedback. Implemented 360 degree evaluations of residents with new input from nurses, peers, patients/families, administrative staff. Improved administrative oversight such as duty-hours tracking, compliance with case-log system. Nurse practitioners embedded on patient care teams at multiple sites.; General Surgery Program Director (2012–2016)

  • Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Faculty Development Program in Medical Education Steering Committee. The first year-long Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Educator Program was held in Buffalo in 2006. In 2010, JSMBS faculty began to co-teach the program in partnership with the RCP educators with a longterm goal of transitioning to independence from the RCP. Starting in October 2018, we held the first 2-day session of the educator program with all JSMBS faculty. The successful transition required recruiting new UB faculty to teach, updating the curriculum, and revising the slide presentations and interactive sessions.; Physician Educator (2010–present)
