Professional Summary:

As a clinician-researcher in pediatric anesthesiology, my interest has covered the spectrum from laboratory investigations of inhaled agents to a panoply of clinical dilemmas and queries. My primary interest in research began as a fellow in CVRI in San Francisco during which time I investigated the pharmacology of inhalation anesthetics in tissues in the lab and in neonates in the operating room. That research year ignited my interest in clinical research and over the past four decades, I have investigated numerous clinical conundrums and unknowns that included developing inhalation anesthetics for use in premature and full-term neonates, infants and children; describing the pharmacology of a number of drugs of importance in children; understanding the physiology of the pediatric/neonatal airway; the effects of breast milk and formula aspiration in animals; preoperative fasting principles; and a sundry of other key issues all aimed to improve the safety and quality of care we provide our patients.
