Professional Summary:

I see outpatients at the Dent Tower and do inpatient consults and procedures at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC). My work focuses on the nutritional and metabolic aspects of gastroenterology. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of nutritional deficiencies in patients with chronic digestive disorders such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, chronic pancreatic disease, and others that impair nutrient digestion and absorption. I have a particular interest in vitamin D deficiency and bone disease in patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases. I have extensive experience in nutrition support therapies for patients both in the hospital and at home, including tube feedings and total parenteral nutrition.

My research has included both laboratory and clinical investigation on a broad range of topics in nutrition and gastroenterology disorders. I have examined the mechanisms of intestinal absorption of vitamins and minerals and have studied nutrient utilization in animals receiving intravenous feedings. I conduct clinical studies of vitamin D absorption and bone disease in patients with Crohn’s disease, liver disease, and other malabsorptive disorders. Other research has focused on calcium metabolism in patients on prolonged parenteral nutrition and the role of total parenteral nutrition in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease or the short bowel syndrome.

I am also interested in motility disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. I have a strong interest in the diagnosis and therapy of motility diseases of the stomach and small intestine that result in poor dietary intake and absorption and malnutrition. I am involved in the study of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, and functional diarrhea. I collaborate with faculty investigators from different disciplines in NIH-funded trials of cognitive behavior therapy for these conditions. I have also conducted research on new methodologies for measuring transit and motor function through the different segments of the gastrointestinal tract. By doing so, I hope to provide better nutritional options and treatment solution to patients with gastrointestinal disorders, as well as educate the next generation of physicians with my own findings.

I enjoy teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and for 11 years have been the director of the UB gastroenterology fellowship program.
