A new class of UB medical students celebrated their entry into the medical profession at this year’s White Coat Ceremony held on August 13 in Slee Auditorium on UB’s North Campus.

During the ceremony, it was announced that the Class of 2014 has the highest science averages, highest overall grade point averages and highest MCAT scores of any class every admitted to UB medical school.

“Accordingly, you should be aware, that we have great expectations regarding your future accomplishments, leadership, and excellence in medicine, science, and education,” said Dean Michael E. Cain, MD, in his welcoming remarks to the students.

During the ceremony, Charles Severin, MD ’97, PhD, associate dean for medical education and admissions, provided an overview of the class, as follows:

  • Total number of applications:  4,329
  • Number of applicants interviewed: 645
  • Science GPA: 3.70
  • Overall GPA: 3.70
  • MCAT: 32
  • Science/non-science majors: 113/31
  • Over 85 percent of the class conducted research prior to medical school
  • One student holds a PhD; 12 hold master’s degrees

Awards

Academic All Big Ten; Intel Science Talent Search Finalist; National Society of Collegiate Scholars; Phi Beta Kappa, two Eagle Scouts; one Girl Scout Gold Award (given to only 5 percent of girls in scouting); Sigma Xi; Academic All American; ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Football Team.

Artistic Endeavors

Play clarinet, flute, jazz guitar (recorded a full-length album), classical guitar, piano, alto saxophone, organ; acting; ballroom dancing, Irish step dancing, break dancing; electronic and neo-classical music composition; film maker; photographer.

Notable Athletic Endeavors

Gold medal winner in pole vault (female) at the New York Empire State Games; qualified to run the New York City Marathon; qualified to run the Boston Marathon.
