Gibbons Named Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs

Kevin J. Gibbons, MD, associate professor and vice chair in the Department of Neurosurgery, has been named senior associate dean for clinical affairs and executive director of UB Associates (UBA)/UBMD Physicians Group (UBMD).
“In addition to his outstanding experience in clinical service, research and teaching, Dr. Gibbons has the administrative and leadership skills needed to fulfill this dual role in our academic health center,” says Michael E. Cain, MD, vice president for health sciences and dean, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Undertaking Important Responsibilities in Joint Role
“Dr. Gibbons will oversee the management of the clinical practice, implement the organization’s strategic vision and ensure an optimal relationship between the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, UBMD, and our partner institutions. We are most fortunate to have him assume this important responsibility,” says Cain.
In his joint position, Gibbons will undertake duties including developing and implementing a clinical service strategic plan, supervising the staff of UBA/UBMD, liaising with community partners and overseeing practice plan collaborations.
In-Depth Research and Teaching Experience
An accomplished neurosurgeon, Gibbons’ areas of expertise and research include the surgical treatment of brain tumors, spinal and pituitary tumors, complex cervical disorders, critical care and adult hydrocephalus.
For 15 years, Gibbons directed the Department of Neurosurgery’s residency program, ranked one of the nation’s top neurosurgery training programs.
His research has been published in journals including Neurosurgery, Neurocritical Care, the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Surgical Neurology and the Journal of Neuro-Oncology.
He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Neurosurgery and Critical Care Medicine.
Holds Leadership Roles In WNY Health Care
Gibbons is medical director, operational performance and physician director of surgical services at Buffalo General Medical Center and Gates Vascular Institute. He is also chief of neurosurgery for Kaleida Health.
He will continue his surgical practice, based at Buffalo General Medical Center and Gates Vascular Institute.
Gibbons also is a member of the Kaleida Health GVI Physician Leadership Board and the Board of Directors, Kaleida Health.
Until 2014, he was president of the medical staff at Kaleida. He has served on the UBMD Management Council and has chaired the Great Lakes Health Professional Steering Committee.
Alumnus of UB Training Programs
Gibbons completed his residency in neurological surgery and a fellowship in surgical critical care at UB. He received his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Albany Medical College.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Medical Society of the County of Erie and the Medical Society of the State of New York.

He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
