I was born and raised in Florida and completed my undergraduate and medical school education at Florida State University. As a first-generation college graduate, I wanted to find a career that would not only be challenging and fulfilling but would also allow me to give back to my community.
While at FSU, I had the opportunity to work with a neurosurgeon early on. One of my first clinical experiences was with a patient who came in with an ischemic stroke and went from being paralyzed to fully functional during the procedure after undergoing mechanical thrombectomy. Seeing this profound, immediate impact sparked my interest in neurosurgery.
When I was applying to neurosurgery residency programs, I wanted to be at a program that was clinically busy and on the leading edge of innovation within the field. The UB Neurosurgery program is one of the highest-volume residencies in the country, and, as trainees, we are fortunate enough to learn from leaders within each neurosurgery subspecialty while having access to the newest and latest technology.
In addition, our faculty members are actively involved in national and international research efforts to find better, more effective ways to treat challenging neurosurgical conditions.
The best part of our neurosurgery residency program is by far the people. Our attendings are committed to resident education and demand excellence in every aspect of patient care. Our resident cohort is also made up of individuals who are motivated, collegial, and supportive, which makes the more challenging days of residency more manageable.
Coming from Florida, my wife and I knew living in Buffalo would be quite a change. So far, it has been a phenomenal experience. Given the relatively affordable cost of living, many of our residents are able to purchase homes and start families during our time here.
There is always something to do for everyone, including trying new restaurants, hiking, and visiting nearby cities like Toronto. The Buffalo airport is also accessible and convenient for staying connected with our families back in Florida.
