Psychiatry resident Tatum Burdo, MD, MPH, has a particular interested in serving the unmet mental health needs of newcomers in the Western New York community.
Tatum Burdo, MD, MPH, is a trainee in the psychiatry residency program.
She was born and raised in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, and completed her Master of Public Health degree at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.
Afterwards, Burdo spent some years working in refugee resettlement, before earning her medical degree at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.
She initially came to the University at Buffalo to pursue residency training in family medicine, but fell in love with psychiatry and pursued a transfer to UB's psychiatry residency after her PGY-2 year.
During my family medicine training, I cared for many patients with psychiatric needs. I became increasingly interested in the unmet mental health needs of newcomers in our community.
I was drawn to UB's psychiatry program for the exposure it would provide to a diverse array of severe and persistent mental illnesses.
We spend a lot of time during our psychiatry training at the Erie County Medical Center’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), which sees the largest volume of patients in New York State!
We also work on a variety of inpatient psychiatric units. I also value the time dedicated to growing one's psychotherapy skillset.
I have really enjoyed my time on the inpatient first episode psychosis unit. UB's psychiatry training program has provided me with supportive faculty mentors to further explore this area of clinical interest.
UB's psychiatry program also provides an opportunity to grow my interest in teaching, through engagement in the Medical Educator Track.
I love Buffalo's food scene. My list of restaurants-to-try is perpetually growing.
In particular, I love drinking chai at the Yemeni coffee shops that are opening around the city!
