Core Research Areas

The core research areas of the Child and Maternal Health Research Institute (CMHRI) were carefully selected to align with the greatest needs in maternal and child health and reflect UB’s existing scientific and clinical strengths. These domains represent both urgent public health priorities and areas where our faculty have demonstrated national leadership and success in securing competitive funding.

Focusing on Critical Health Issues

The CMHRI focuses on high-impact areas of research that address the most pressing health challenges facing children and mothers today. Our work is designed not only to uncover the biological and clinical roots of disease but also to rapidly translate findings into meaningful improvements in care, prevention, and policy. Together, these core areas reflect our commitment to a healthier, more equitable future:

  • Pediatric and Maternal Diabetes and Obesity
Addressing a global health crisis through innovative clinical trials, real-world data-driven interventions, and translational science to reduce the lifelong burden of diabetes and associated conditions.
  • Pulmonology, Asthma, and Resuscitation
Advancing clinical care and emergency response through cutting-edge research on pediatric respiratory illness, chronic diseases, and neonatal resuscitation, helping children breathe easier and survive critical illness.
  • Infectious Disease and Immunology
Leading discoveries in vaccine development, rapid diagnostics, and immune system science to better protect vulnerable pediatric and maternal populations from preventable and emerging infectious threats.
