This fund provides $4,000 ($2,000 per semester) to an undergraduate majoring in biochemistry, biomedical sciences, neuroscience or pharmacology and toxicology.
The scholarship was made possible by an endowment established by Albert Somit, former UB executive vice president.
Somit, who served as the university’s acting president in 1977, established the endowment to “honor his mother, who, like so many others of her generation, left family, friends and all that was familiar in Russia to seek a better life for her family in the U.S.”
Somit initiated the scholarship fund through a bequest to benefit hard-working and deserving undergraduates in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The first Somit scholarship was awarded in 1999.
