Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship and Nader Fellowship

This fellowship supports rising second-year medical student summer research projects with UB-affiliated faculty members.

The Dean’s Research Fellowship supports up to six medical students who are conducting summer research projects with UB-affiliated faculty. Students must be between their first and second years of medical school. Students without prior research experience are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Students who submit an application to do cardiovascular-related research will also be considered for the Nader Research Fellowship. This summer research gift was established by Dr. Nader to encourage students to consider the field of cardiology research.

Students not selected for the Nader fellowship are still considered for the Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship.

Award Amount

Dean's Summer Research Fellowship: $3,000
Nader Fellowship:

Submit all materials by March 1.

To apply, you must be:

  • A first-year medical student at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in good standing
  • Sponsored by a UB-affiliated faculty member

Application Requirements

We encourage you to attend the Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship/Proposal Writing noontime session to learn about writing a research proposal and the spring Meet and Greet to help you identify a potential research sponsor. Information on both of these sessions will be sent to first-year students through email and typically occur in mid-January.

You must find a research sponsor and set up a research experience before you apply.

Once you’ve identified a research sponsor, work with that faculty member to prepare your application for consideration. Each of the following documents must be completed as part of your application.

You must also submit three paper copies of each document to the Office of Student and Academic Affairs.

Requirements for Selected Candidates

As a chosen candidate for the Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship or Nader Fellowship, you must:

  • Provide documentation that your project has received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. As part of this, you must complete CITI training for biomedical studies. This involves completing two online courses. More information will be provided to those selected.
  • Conduct the research full-time over the 10-week-period of the summer.
  • Have your sponsor submit a mid-summer progress report confirming that you are fulfilling your research commitment.
  • Attend a mid-summer educational luncheon in July where you will provide an update on your project and receive feedback from the selection committee and fellow student fellows.
  • Present your research in poster format at the annual research forum that will take place in January of your second year of medical school.
Additional requirement for the recipient of the Nader Fellowship:
  • You must submit a presentation proposal for an annual cardiovascular conference. Expenses to attend the conference should be paid out of the Nader Fellowship Fund stipend that you receive. No additional funding will be given for activity, so please plan accordingly.

Awardees will be selected in mid-March and notified in late March.
