Dr. Franz E. and Elizabeth Glasauer Externship Fund

The fund supports students in good standing who have completed at least their first year of medical school and plan to participate in a global health care experience abroad.

The Glasauer Externship Fund is a clinically-based program fund donated by Franz E. Glasauer, MD, and Elizabeth Glasauer.

The fund facilitates overseas experiences for medical students and residents by giving them opportunities to provide direct patient care through experiences such as fourth year global health electives or research efforts that benefit international health care markets—particularly in developing countries or international medically underserved regions.

Consideration will also be made for students who choose clinical experiences that serve refugee populations in Western New York.

Award Amount

A maximum of $3,500 will be granted to students traveling to Africa, Asia, or South Pacific. A maximum of $1,500 will be granted to students traveling to Latin America or the Caribbean.

Eligibility

All medical students who have completed their first year of medical school, who are in good standing—and who are interested in and plan to care for refugees and/or underserved international communities—are eligible to apply.

Preference will be given to individuals who:

  • choose an experience abroad that lasts at least four weeks
  • have demonstrated an interest in global health issues through activities both during and before medical school
  • can articulate their passion for learning more about this field and explain how it may impact their career path

Participation Requirements

The selected students must:

  • prepare a summary report of the experience
  • possible presentation of their experience to the donors
