Toxicology Research Center

Paul J. Kostyniak, PhD.

Paul J. Kostyniak, PhD, who directs the Toxicology Research Center, has organized an interdisciplinary research and teaching program that applies the expertise of specialists — including toxicologists, pharmacologists, chemists, pathologists and physicians — to basic and applied research problems in toxicology.

Our facility provides expertise in toxicology for basic and applied research projects. We maintain an analytical toxicology laboratory and offer a wide variety of analytical techniques to solve complicated research problems.

We are available to collaborate with investigators needing analytical and toxicological expertise for outgoing grants and funded projects.

Our Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training Center also provides a wide variety of worker training and student education classes.

Toxicology Laboratory

This multiuser facility houses instrumentation for conducting cellular, biochemical and molecular studies. We have expertise in preclinical drug testing; our primary focus has been on:

  • radiodiagnostic drugs
  • drug and chemical absorption
  • distribution metabolism and excretion kinetics
  • testing of antimicrobial agents
  • wound healing assays

We maintain a wide variety of resources for investigators including:

  • Krumdieck precision-cut tissue slicer, custom designed incubators, a Wallac Tri/Lux Microbeta Scintillation Chemiluminescence Counter, microplate readers, densitometers and additional equipment
  • in vitro and in vivo models useful for comparative studies
  • primary tissue explant models
  • cell culture using various cell lines
  • an array of biochemical and molecular techniques
  • Single Stranded Conformation Polymorphism (SSCP) and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) analysis for studies in toxicogenomics

Analytical Laboratory

This laboratory concentrates on new method development and sample analysis. We have participated in nationwide proficiency programs for polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides and mercury.

We can perform numerous analytical techniques including GC and HPLC with a large variety of detection methods including diode array, -MS and ECD. We will adapt our techniques to individuals’ needs.

Education Programs

We are an OSHA Education Center and a Worker Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Training Center. We also provide training classes to students.
