Residents Share Findings During Urology Research Day

Urology residents and medical students from several universities presented their research at the Upstate New York Urological Association’s 24th annual Urology Resident Research Day.

Seventy-five people attended the event, including department chairs, program directors, residents and medical students from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Albany Medical Center, SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Queen’s University, and University of Rochester

Thirty-seven students participated, sharing nearly 40 different research projects.

Tumor Study Awarded 2nd Place

Shervin Badkhshan, MD, a resident in the Department of Urology's residency program, was awarded second place for his study titled “Spontaneous Regression of Renal Cell Carcinoma Tumors on Active Surveillance.”

The following UB urology residents also presented their research projects:

  • Nicole Belko, MD: “Fellowship Training Among Members of the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU)”
  • Harold Hamann, MD: “PSA Screening Trends in County Hospital Primary Care Clinics”
  • Tyler Maiers, MD: “Genitourinary Foreign Bodies: An Underestimated and Serious Problem in the Prison Population”

Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences medical student Eric Chevli presented his study titled “Incidence and Management of Urologic Complications in Renal Transplants.”

Visiting Professor Presents Awards

Kenneth Angermeier, MD, professor of surgery (urology) at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, presented on “Complications of Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer: Strictures and Fistulas.”

As Visiting Professor, Angermeier presented awards to residents for Clinical Research, Basic Science Research and Special Recognition.

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences’ Department of Urology hosted this year’s event, held April 6 at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center in Syracuse, N.Y.
