Research Advocate is Honored Speaker

Honored Speaker Mary Woolley is president of Research!America, a not-for-profit alliance whose goal is to make health-related research a higher national priority.

Describing a challenging environment for new doctors and a “poor prognosis” for U.S. medical research, Woolley encouraged the Class of 2013 “to become advocates for research for health.”

“You are the future of health,” she told the graduates. “Every UB graduate must use his or her influence to help shape policy that will impact health care delivery and the entire research ecosystem.”

Often interviewed in the national media, Woolley has written and edited for 30 years on science advocacy and research-related topics. She is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, where she serves on the Governing Council.

Class Speaker Recognized

Class speaker Ethan Gable received several honors, including the 2013 Clyde L. Randall Society Award in Gynecology-Obstetrics for diligence, integrity, scholarship and leadership.

He will undertake a residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

Iris Dedication

The Class of 2013 dedicated the Iris medical school yearbook to Donna L. Harber, staff assistant for medical curriculum in the Office of Medical Education, for her “hard work helping us through the first and second years of our long journey.”
