Gerald Sufrin, MD, professor of urology, retired in December 2021 after long service to the Department of Urology and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Sufrin served as chair of the Department of Urology from 1981 to 2018 and as residency program director from 1981 to 2015.
“Dr. Sufrin has been an integral part of this department for years and is one of the main reasons for our success in training residents and medical students and teaching them about the importance of urology,” says K. Kent Chevli, MD, chair of the Department of Urology. “His retirement is well deserved and his presence within the department will be tremendously missed.”
Over the course of his career, Sufrin served on numerous national and international committees and as chair of the American Urological Association (AUA) from 1993 to 1997. He became chair of the Research Committee of the AUA in 1994, and in 1996 he was elected by the Northeastern Section of the AUA to the AUA board of directors. In May 2000, Sufrin was elected to serve as treasurer of the AUA and chair of their New Headquarters Building Committee and Investment Committee. In 2017, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the AUA. The award is presented annually to an individual, at least 25 years following completion of residency, who has made outstanding contributions to advance the mission and goals of the AUA.
