Two UB medical students—Anita Tipirneni and Gary Altwerger—are currently completing a one-year fellowship in the Clinical Research Training Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Tipirneni recently reported on her experience, explaining that she is working with Craig Blackstone, MD, PhD, in the cellular neurology division of National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the NIH.
Blackstone’s lab researches the neurogenetics of hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs). Tipirneni, who plans to pursue a career in neurology, is completing a project that focuses on the molecular pathophysiology of HSPs.
“The experience has been excellent,” she says. “I am able to work with researchers at the forefront of their fields and am being trained in clinical research methodologies.”
