L. Nelson Hopkins, MD, professor and chair of neurosurgery, has been named a State University of New York Distinguished Professor, the highest faculty rank in the SUNY system.

Hopkins pioneered the field of endovascular neurosurgery and is a leader in catheter-based treatments of stroke.

Trailblazer for Minimally Invasive Procedures

Hopkins pioneered the field of endovascular neurosurgery, a subspecialty dedicated to minimally invasive treatment of vascular diseases of the brain and spine.

A leader in catheter-based treatments of stroke, he has served as principal investigator of several national clinical trials testing catheter-based technologies and has trained a new generation of neurosurgeons in their use.

In addition, Hopkins is the endovascular principal for Neurosurgery’s editorial board and has authored more than 300 publications centered on stroke prevention and treatment.

Leads Interdisciplinary Translational Research

An advocate of cross-specialty and multidisciplinary collaboration, Hopkins directs and helped found the Toshiba Stroke Research Center, which brings together physicists, chemists, aerospace engineers, neurosurgeons, cardiologists and radiologists to study, treat and prevent neurovascular diseases.

Hopkins serves as president and CEO of the Jacobs Institute, which is housed in UB's Clinical and Translational Science Institute and fosters partnerships among UB, Kaleida Health, community physicians and industry.

Hopkins also helped create the Gates Vascular Institute and chairs its board.
