The Department of Medicine’s Division of General Internal Medicine had a strong showing at the 2017 Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) annual meeting with 11 research posters and one oral presentation.
Conducted April 19-22 in Washington, D.C., the annual meeting of the SGIM is the society’s premier event, a highly competitive conference that attracts physicians from preeminent universities throughout the country.
“The society focuses on clinical research to advance medical education and patient care in internal medicine,” says Roberto O. Diaz Del Carpio, MD, assistant professor and director of the combined internal medicine-preventive medicine residency program. “We were thrilled when our division was notified that 11 posters and one oral presentation were accepted.”
The oral presentation was “Correlates of Opiate Misuse of Patients on Chronic Opiate Therapy for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain in an Academic, Safety-Net Primary Care Clinic,” by Smita Y. Bakhai, MD, assistant professor.
In addition, AnneMarie Laurri, MD, a PGY-2 resident, was one of only 25 recipients nationwide of a Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship, which is designed to give students, interns and residents interested in a career in GIM the opportunity to attend the SGIM annual meeting.
The following posters were presented:
