All aspects of vertebrate animal research must be carried out in a humane and ethical manner. To accomplish this, there are federal and private agencies that set guidelines, grant accreditation, and oversee animal research throughout the country. Every institution must have an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to establish local policy and oversee animal usage for research and teaching, and assist researchers in their experimental planning in order to assure compliance with these guidelines.

This session will review the essential elements for the ethical use of animals and describe the role of the IACUC in assisting investigators to meet these regulatory guidelines and, importantly, assuring that the university remains compliant and retains its accreditation.
