Orly Stein (UB Student, Class of 2022) is an Information Technology and Management major from Long Island, NY. In the future, she hopes to get more experience with cyber security and hopefully pursue a career in the field. In her free time, Orly enjoys playing soccer, going to SoulCycle with her friends and snowboarding.

The next time you open the HUB, you’ll still be able to do all the things you log into HUB for, like enrolling in classes, paying bills, and updating your personal information.

But a few important things are different:

  • A new, tile-based interface that is device-aware and fits all screen sizes
  • An automated activity guide that requests updates to your information as needed
  • Functionality and updates will be regularly reviewed and added, as needed

The changes will only affect the Student Center; faculty and staff access to HUB will remain the same.

Students led the charge

Being able to access HUB from your mobile devices will benefit everyone at UB.

To design the new interface, UBIT relied on student feedback to create a new HUB that fits every student’s needs. UBIT organized several rounds of testing with UB students, who offered suggestions and, ultimately, positive feedback about the changes.

“We are going to continue soliciting student feedback, and conduct an ongoing review of functionality and update as needed,” said Craig MacVittie, Application Development Manager for UBIT.

“The new design allows us to continue changing and improving the user experience much more easily and consistently – something that is important to everyone across the university who worked on this project,” MacVittie said.

Drew Colosimo, Technical Lead for UBIT, was part of the team that worked to pinpoint student problem areas, and ensure they were fixed in the new update.

“As we were developing it, we made sure not to introduce or carry over any of the issues students raised during testing.”

Teaming up to create a better HUB experience

The big change was brought forward by a collaboration between the offices of the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and the Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

“This upgrade was made possible through the vision, skill and effort of many members of the UB community from across the university. We want to celebrate their hard work in making this a success,” said Kara Saunders, University Registrar.

The much-needed change was managed by Dawn Billen, Sr. Programmer/Analyst for UBIT, who worked closely with Joe Rizzo, Assistant Director of HUB & Student Systems, and Sarah Mack, Assistant Registrar.

Every contributor is greatly appreciated and recognized for their hard work for the project.
