Starting August 18, 2025, UB Infomation Technology is changing the number of emails students can send to 500 messages every 24 hours, giving UBmail accounts more protection against potential security threats and mass email scams.

Know the limits

The number of UBmail messages that UB students can send within a 24-hour period is being updated. All current UB students can send 500 emails per day with their UBmail account, with a maximum of 250 recipients per message.

The new sending limit was chosen based on current UB student sending statistics and will not restrict the amount of mail that can be received by student accounts.

How can students send group emails?

If you need to send more messages for official academic, business, or club related correspondence, consider using LISTSERV mailing lists. Learn how UB allows you to create, manage, and control electronic mailing lists through your UBmail through LISTERV. Before sending mass digital communications to the university, students should review UB’s Mass Digital Communications Policy.

Keeping your accounts safer

This update will reduce the potential for outside security threats and protect against threat actors trying to access compromised UB accounts. In the event an attacker does gain access to a UBmail account, the reduced sending limit prevents them from sending mass emails to large groups of UB students, providing another safeguard against phishing attempts on students.

“When an account is compromised, one of the primary uses of the account by an attacker is to phish with it. The more emails accounts are allowed to send, the more phishing can be done, which increases the risk of attackers gaining access to additional accounts,” explains Joe Grupp, UB's Chief Information Security Officer.
