Software.

The University at Buffalo and the School of Medicine offers its students basic software for productivity, safe computing, and also offers recommendations for useful software.

Data Analysis

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS.

Landmark was developed by the scientists at the Institute for Data Analysis and Visualization (IDAV) and the University of California, Davis. Working together with collaborators at the American Museum of Natural History, the team was able to build an easy to use tool for landmark editing and placement on geometric surfaces typically obtained via laser range scans.

The main purpose of Landmark is to easily place landmark points and semi-landmark points accurately and with high repeatability on complex surfaces for the purpose of registration, alignment, morphing, and computation of hypothetical ancestors in evolutionary trees.

Morphometrics These programs are used to digitized landmark locations, capture outlines, or to interface with devices such as digital calipers. See the utility webpage for programs to manipulate data files and transform file formats.

Imaging Software

Fiji is an image processing package — a "batteries-included" distribution of ImageJ, bundling many plugins which facilitate scientific image analysis.

Mango (Multi-image Analysis GUI) – is a viewer for medical research images. It provides analysis tools and a user interface to navigate image volumes.

MorphoJ is an integrated program package for doing geometric morphometrics. The goal of the program is to provide a platform for the most important types of ...

3D Slicer is an open source software platform for medical image informatics, image processing, and three-dimensional visualization. Built over two decades through support from the National Institutes of Health and a worldwide developer community, Slicer brings free, powerful cross-platform processing tools to physicians, researchers, and the general public.

Virtual Private Network

For off campus computing, the use of a "virtual private network" (VPN) client is needed to access certain UB services and Jacobs School services. Along with an internet connection, AnyConnect client will connect you with UB and access to some of the computing service blocked to outside users.

Recommended for All

When connecting to University resource, it is important that your computer has been updated with the latest operating system patches and releases as well as having a updated antivirus protection. The University at Buffalo offers UB-licensed software to help you and us stay protected. Also, you'll find advice, tips, and links to some other recommend software. Visit the UBIT site for more information and the software available.
