N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are ionotropic glutamate receptors that play an important role in CNS synaptic transmission. They are essential for learning and memory formation, and they are key regulators of neuroplasticity. I am interested in learning about NMDA receptor dysfunction during the aging process and in certain neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease. I would specifically like to research the role that oxidative stress plays in these circumstances, as well as how oxidative stress may alter NMDA receptor function and activity. I use electrophysiological techniques to learn more about these receptors, including cell-attached patch clamp and slice electrophysiology.
